Why Site Readiness Determines Success

Most autonomous robot deployments succeed or struggle for practical reasons, not technical ones. The robot works. What determines a smooth rollout is whether the building is ready for it: the floors, the network, the doors, and the space to charge and stage.

Spending an hour on a site walk before deployment prevents the small surprises that otherwise slow a launch. This checklist covers the questions worth answering first.

Floors, Thresholds, and Pathways

Robots move best on consistent, navigable surfaces. Note the floor types along the route, any thresholds or ramps, and whether pathways stay clear during operating hours. Sudden transitions, clutter, or frequently blocked corridors are the usual friction points.

Walk the actual route the robot will run and look at it from the robot's perspective. A path that is obvious to a person can hide a threshold or a pinch point that is worth addressing up front.

Connectivity: WiFi, Cellular, and Networks

Most autonomous robots rely on a network connection for updates, monitoring, and some navigation features. Confirm coverage along the whole route, not just at the starting point, since dead zones in a far corridor can interrupt operation.

Decide early whether the unit will run on facility WiFi or an independent cellular connection, and involve your IT team so the connectivity plan fits your security requirements from the start.

Doors, Elevators, and Access Control

If the route crosses controlled doors or changes floors, plan for it. Autonomous door and elevator integration lets a robot traverse access-controlled openings and move between floors, but it requires scoping the specific doors and elevators involved.

Count the doors and elevators on the route and note how each is controlled today. This is exactly the kind of detail that is quoted per site after a survey, so identifying it early keeps the deployment on schedule.

Power, Charging, and Space

Every robot needs a home base to charge and stage. Identify where the charging station will sit, that a suitable outlet is available, and that the location is out of the main flow of traffic but convenient to the route.

Also plan for storage and staging so the unit has a clear place to start and end its runs. A well-placed base keeps the robot available and out of the way.

The Pre-Deployment Checklist

Before deployment, confirm the route and floor surfaces, network coverage along the whole path, any doors or elevators to integrate, the charging location and power, and the staging space. Add a clear point of contact on site and defined operating hours and zones.
